On Becoming an Active Witness

February 7, 2017

Excerpted from upcoming release of Eric's Book Witness: A Lawyers Journey from Litigation to Liberation

....As active witnesses we use our work and activism to hold a mirror up to society even when the face reflected back is not so pretty.  America can aspire to be much more - a moral superpower. ‘The most important human endeavor is the striving for morality in our actions.” Einstein wrote. “Our inner balance and even our very existence depend on it. Only morality in our actions can give beauty and dignity to life.”  While the world appeared more divisive than ever I made the conscious choice to not get dragged into the muck, nor the battle, but to rise above it. Lawyers can be part of restoring this dignity.

But I’d witnessed the ugly head of hate draped in our flag, and felt how easy it is to go into anger and blame when people react with violence. Could I hold onto the forgiveness, compassion and ubuntu I’d learned in my spiritual and holistic journey and apply it  outside the courtroom to the community and our world at large? It was not simply a commitment or awareness, but would require imagination, creativity and a little rhythmic grace to remind me to keep my heart open to new possibilities.  I did not, though,  expect to be  saved by a poem.
